In his first curated launch for Avant Arte, critic and curator Larry Ossei Mensah muses on 'accessible excellence', a phrase coined by actor Daniel Kaluuya in reference to the virtues of a patient, craft-driven approach when building a meaningful creative career.
Though varied in style, painters Grace Lynne Haynes, Ferrari Sheppard and Otis Kwame Key Quaicoe are united by the clarity of vision evident unusually early in their respective practices, each having rapidly established a distinctive approach to figuration and portraiture. The three works launching next month will be each artist’s first print edition, a moment of inflection attesting Larry’s long-standing commitment to facilitating career firsts.
With Grace, Ferrari and Otis all reflecting - this year more than ever - on the importance of physical touch, all three will be finishing their prints by hand. These unique details, coupled with Avant Arte’s bespoke printing methods, offer a natural bridge from the artists’ existing oeuvres to their debut print editions.
